Welcome to First Universalist Society of Salem, Massachusetts!
Welcome to our website, we are glad that you are interested in our congregation and the good news we are happy to share with the world - This is a place where you are welcome to bring your whole self and encouraged to "Nurture your spirit while helping to heal our World..."
We are a welcoming congregation, encouraging and celebrating the participation of all people including straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning. We welcome people of all cultural and ethnic backgrounds and especially blended families (ethnic or religious). We welcome people who are on varied spiritual paths and pride ourselves in a diverse theological community finding unity in our liberal religious values. We are democratically organized and self- governing. Members contribute their time, talents and money to support the church and its varied programs.
The church was founded in 1805. In 1808, Reverend Hosea Ballou (a founding member of the Universalist Church) laid the cornerstone of the current building, a beautiful example of classic Federal architecture. The Hutchings organ, built in 1888, has 1,200 pipes and is one of the finest historic organs in New England.
We are a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations, which does not require a commitment to a specific creed or school of thought, which enables us to embrace people of all faiths and those who seek community but consider themselves agnostic or atheist. We do endeavor to abide by the Unitarian Universalist Principles, which provide a guideline with which to engage in community and the larger world.

    Affirmation
      Love is the spirit of this church,
the quest for truth is its sacrament
and service is its prayer.
      This is our covenant;
to dwell together in peace,
to seek knowledge in freedom,
and to help those in need.
      Thus do we covenant with each other
and with God (Goddess).
